Holiday Safety Tips for Pets

The Christmas season is full of joy, but we must remember our furry friends. The festive environment, while exciting for us, can sometimes pose hidden dangers to our beloved pets. Here is your essential guide to ensuring a safe and happy holiday for your cat or dog.

1. Dangers of the Decor

  • The Christmas Tree: Secure your tree firmly so curious climbers and wagging tails can't knock it over. Pine needles, if ingested, can cause intestinal irritation.

  • Ornaments and Tinsel: Decorations, especially glass ornaments, can cause serious cuts if chewed or broken. Tinsel, a common cat favorite, is extremely dangerous if swallowed as it can cause severe intestinal obstruction requiring emergency surgery. Keep these out of paw's reach.

  • Lights and Wires: Chewing on electrical cords can lead to shocks or burns. Make sure all wires are tucked away or covered.

2. Toxic Treats and Plants

  • Food Favorites: Festive foods like chocolate (toxic to both cats and dogs), grapes/raisins (can cause kidney failure in dogs), onions, garlic, and excessive fatty scraps (can lead to pancreatitis) must be kept strictly away from pets.

  • Seasonal Plants: Many popular holiday plants are toxic. Mistletoe and holly berries can cause gastrointestinal upset and even cardiovascular issues. Poinsettias are generally mildly toxic, causing irritation to the mouth and stomach.

3. Stress and Guests

  • A Quiet Retreat: The hustle and bustle of holiday parties can be overwhelming. Provide your pet with a safe, quiet space (a kennel or separate room) where they can retreat from guests and noise.

  • Mind the Door: With frequent guest arrivals and departures, pets can easily slip out unnoticed. Ensure your pet has current ID tags and consider keeping them in their safe room during peak activity.
